Summary
The aim of the project is to develop a traffic-responsive integrated and co-ordinated urban network control strategy, and to implement and evaluate the developed strategy in the urban network of the city of Chania. The project will be performed in two equal phases of duration 15 months.
During the first phase, a methodology for traffic-responsive integrated and co-ordinated urban traffic control will be developed. The methodology will employ traffic lights and variable message signs for control purposes.
The development of the methodology will be supported by simulation investigations. For this reason, the macroscopic modelling tool METACOR will be used in order to model and simulate the urban network of the city of Chania taking into account the signal control, the variable message signs, and several different scenarios of traffic conditions.
During the second phase, the developed strategy will be applied within the recently updated control infrastructure of the city of Chania taking into account only the signal control. The implementation phase will include demonstration of the operation of the strategy, evaluation of the effectiveness of the strategy, and comparison of the strategy with the existing control strategy of the Municipality of Chania.
