Summary
The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate by means of microscopic simulation (using the microscopic traffic simulator AIMSUN) of a new urban signal real-time traffic control strategy. The new strategy is expected to improve significantly the efficient strategy TUC developed by the Dynamic Systems and Simulation Laboratory and implemented successfully to 4 different large-scale European traffic networks. Similarly to TUC, the new strategy is based on the store-and-forward traffic model and uses a generic, simple, and powerful problem formulation in the format of a discrete-time optimal control problem whose numerical solution is achieved by quadratic programming. It is expected that the new strategy will overcome the problem emergeing in TUC where effort is needed for the fine-tuning of the TUC control parameters.
