Abstract

The paper presents an approach to the design of motorway-to-motorway control. The presented approach is based on suitable application of ramp metering to a motorway merging area. The motorway-to-motorway control has been applied and tested in simulation. For use in the corresponding evaluation study, the integrated macroscopic model namely METACOR has been calibrated and validated on the basis of real traffic data selected under a broad spectrum of traffic conditions. Several control measures are introduced to ameliorate traffic performance including motorway-to-motorway and ramp-metering. The obtained results prove that the motorway-to-motorway control approach has a significant potential for the amelioration of traffic network performance.
